Suffocation is an American death metal band from Centereach, New York, formed in 1988. Known for their influential debut album Effigy of the Forgotten, the group helped define the sound of 1990s death metal with their intense growled vocals, downtuned and complex guitar work, and powerful drumming. The lineup features lead guitarist Terrance Hobbs, bassist Derek Boyer, rhythm guitarist Charlie Errigo, drummer Eric Morotti, and vocalist Ricky Myers. Taking their name from a Morbid Angel song, Suffocation has released eight albums, earning a reputation for their technical brutality and groundbreaking approach to the genre.
