Electric Light Orchestra

Electric Light Orchestra

Electric Light Orchestra, known as ELO, is an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1970 by Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, and Bev Bevan. The group became known for blending pop melodies with classical arrangements and futuristic themes, shaping a signature sound that stood out in the 1970s and 1980s. After Wood left in 1972, Lynne guided the band as its main creative force, writing and producing nearly all of their music. Originating as an offshoot of the Move, ELO aimed to create modern rock songs inspired by orchestral music. The band enjoyed major success with albums such as Out of the Blue, Discovery, and Time, and achieved a stream of UK and US chart hits. ELO sold over 50 million records and earned numerous international awards during their original run. Following a break-up in 1986 and several periods of inactivity, Lynne revived the band as Jeff Lynne’s ELO with longtime keyboardist Richard Tandy. After Tandy’s death in 2024, Lynne became the sole member. ELO’s legacy includes induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a reputation for bringing symphonic rock to a global audience.
