Iced Earth is an American heavy metal band formed in 1984 by guitarist and songwriter Jon Schaffer in Tampa, Florida, and now based in Columbus, Indiana. Known for their blend of heavy, thrash, and power metal elements, the band released their self-titled debut in 1990 and has since put out twelve studio albums, becoming a staple in the metal scene.
Iced Earth’s classic era featured vocalist Matt Barlow, delivering acclaimed albums like Burnt Offerings and The Dark Saga. Over the years, the band worked with several renowned singers, including Tim Owens and Stu Block, while undergoing frequent lineup changes. Despite the revolving door of members, Schaffer has remained the band’s driving force and only constant.
In 2021, Schaffer's involvement in the US Capitol attack led to legal troubles, the departure of all other members, and the band parting ways with their longtime label. Schaffer received probation in 2024 and was pardoned in 2025. Today, Iced Earth consists solely of Schaffer, whose music and leadership have defined the band’s lasting impact on metal.
