Suprême NTM, often called NTM, is a pioneering French hip hop group that emerged in 1989 from Saint-Denis, Île-de-France. The duo, made up of JoeyStarr and Kool Shen, became known for their hard-hitting, politically charged lyrics addressing issues such as police brutality, racism, and social inequality in the disadvantaged neighborhoods surrounding Paris. Their name comes from a provocative French slang expression, reflecting their confrontational and unapologetic style.
NTM released six influential albums with Sony Music, shaping the French rap scene with a mix of hardcore hip hop, funk, soul, and reggae influences. The group stood out for their contrasting rap styles: JoeyStarr brought an aggressive, raw delivery with a deep voice, while Kool Shen offered a funkier flow and thoughtful, often melancholic lyrics.
While their early work was notorious for its intensity and controversy, later tracks like Pose ton Gun advocated against violence. After their final album as NTM in 1998, both members pursued solo careers and launched their own clothing brands. Although the group’s legacy remains significant, they have largely operated separately since the late 1990s.
