An elliptical stylus is often a practical choice for home listening because it reads more detail than a basic spherical design while remaining relatively easy to set up. In more sensitive systems, also check output voltage and recommended loading so the cartridge works well with the Hi-Fi phono preamp.

When a stylus is enough and when to replace the whole cartridge

If the cartridge body is in good condition and the manufacturer offers a compatible replacement stylus, replacing only the Hi-Fi stylus is often enough. Replacing the complete cartridge makes sense when moving to a higher class, when its usage history is unclear, or when you want to change the sound character of the whole system. With a new turntable, also check whether the headshell, screws and adjustment options for azimuth or overhang are included.
