Tenor Saxophone Reeds, Medium Soft

Tenor saxophone reeds are sized for the larger tenor mouthpiece and are not interchangeable with alto or soprano reeds. Their resistance affects the attack, response to dynamic changes and support you feel while playing. Compare strength, material, profile and pack quantity. A well-matched reed and mouthpiece let the tenor resonate without forcing the sound.

Softer or harder

A softer reed often speaks with less effort and may work with a more open mouthpiece. If it is too flexible for the combination, the tone may lose support at higher volume. A harder reed gives more resistance and may feel firmer on a suitable mouthpiece, but a poor match tires the embouchure and makes soft attacks difficult. Judge strength with your own mouthpiece, not another player's number.

Material, profile and response

Natural cane reeds can vary slightly, which is why players often rotate several. Synthetic reeds tend to be more consistent and require different care, but their feel and strength scale may differ. Check the maker's profile and cut information and test the response on the tenor mouthpiece.

A practical purchase

• Start with a smaller pack for a new mouthpiece or range.
• Once the combination is known, a larger pack supports regular rotation.
• Do not use a damaged tip or warped reed to judge the whole strength.
