Brian Wilson (June 20, 1942 – June 11, 2025) was an American musician, songwriter, and producer best known as the co-founder and creative force behind the Beach Boys. Widely regarded as one of the most innovative figures in popular music, Wilson was celebrated for his advanced production techniques, sophisticated harmonies, and emotionally resonant songwriting. Influenced by artists like George Gershwin and Phil Spector, he helped define the California sound and was a pioneer in treating the studio as an instrument. Launching the Beach Boys in 1961, Wilson served as the chief songwriter, arranger, and producer, crafting classics such as “I Get Around,” “Help Me, Rhonda,” and “Good Vibrations.” His landmark work on the album Pet Sounds and the ambitious, unfinished Smile project set new standards in pop music artistry. Despite longstanding struggles with mental health, Wilson continued to influence generations of musicians across genres from indie rock to psychedelia. Over his career, Wilson received two Grammy Awards, Kennedy Center Honors, and inductions into the Rock and Roll and Songwriters Halls of Fame. His life, marked by creative brilliance and personal challenges, was depicted in the film Love and Mercy. Wilson’s legacy endures as a visionary who expanded the possibilities of popular music.
