Chico Freeman, born in 1949, is a modern jazz tenor saxophonist and trumpeter known for his innovative style. The son of jazz saxophonist Von Freeman, he began his solo recording career in 1976 with the album Morning Prayer. He gained major recognition with the New York Jazz Award in 1979 and received Stereo Review’s Record of the Year in 1981 for The Outside Within.
