Guiros

Guirá, often searched for as guiro, güiro or guira, is a scraped percussion instrument for a clear rhythmic effect. Its ribbed body is played with a stick or scraper, which creates a short to rougher scratch sound across the surface. It is useful when you want to add Latin rhythms to a song without building a large percussion setup.

How to choose a guirá or guiro

Material, shape and scraper

• A metal güira is usually more cutting and louder, a wooden guiro sounds warmer, and plastic models are light for classroom playing.
• A larger body gives more volume, while a smaller one is easier to hold during longer playing.
• Check whether a suitable stick or güira scraper is included; the scraper shape strongly changes the articulation.

A guiro shaker or classic guirá works well in merengue, salsa, acoustic bands and school rhythm exercises.
