The Mahavishnu Orchestra was a pioneering jazz fusion band founded in New York City in 1971 by guitarist John McLaughlin. Known for its electrifying blend of Indian classical music, jazz, and psychedelic rock, the group’s early lineup featured Billy Cobham, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, and Rick Laird. Their powerful, intricate sound and energetic live shows quickly set them apart in the early 1970s. The band went through several lineup changes during its two active periods, from 1971 to 1976 and again from 1984 to 1987. Many members later became influential figures in jazz and fusion music.
