Maracas
Maracas are handheld shakers, also known as rumba shakers. They are played by shaking the handle and are often used as a pair so the rhythm sounds natural and balanced. In Latin music, bands and school rhythm exercises, they add a clear pulse without demanding technique. When choosing, focus mainly on the material, body size and whether the instrument is meant for children, beginners or a stronger stage effect.
How to choose maracas
Wooden maracas and models with a natural body usually offer a warmer, more organic tone. Plastic maracas cope better with frequent carrying, school use and children’s play. Smaller maracas are easier to hold and control, while a larger body or stronger filling gives a fuller and louder sound.
- Children and school: lightweight plastic or smaller maracas with a comfortable handle.
- Latin and home percussion: a balanced pair with a natural, easy-to-follow rhythm.
- Band or studio: a larger model when you need a more pronounced percussion accent.
