Sheet music for wind instruments
Sheet music for wind instruments here includes method books, studies and collections of pieces for flute, recorder, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn, oboe, bassoon and tuba. Hal Leonard publishes the most titles, while Czech authors add beginner method books such as Flautoškola and the clarinet method by Bedřich Zakostelecký. The repertoire covers classical music, pop, rock, jazz and film music. When choosing, the main things to check are the instrument and the key the music is written for.
Why does the instrument’s key matter when choosing sheet music for wind instruments?
Many wind instruments are transposing instruments: the note you play sounds different from the note written on the page. Trumpet, clarinet and tenor saxophone are most commonly in B♭, alto saxophone in E♭ and French horn in F, while flute, oboe, bassoon and trombone usually read music in C. That means you cannot play alto saxophone sheet music directly on the trumpet, even if it is the same song.
Hal Leonard collections therefore come in separate editions for each instrument, such as 101 Popular Songs for flute, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone and French horn. The Real Book jazz collections have separate editions for instruments in B♭ and F, so check the edition’s designation before buying. You can find arrangements for several musicians playing together in the Sheet music for band and orchestra category.
Which sheet music should you choose for flute and recorder?
The transverse flute and recorder have different fingerings and method books, so always check which instrument is meant by flute. For recorder, there are method books for both soprano and alto recorder, such as Flautoškola 1 and 2 by Kvapil and Kvapilová, or the soprano recorder method by Ladislav Daniel. Both groups have their own pages: Flute Sheet Music and Recorder Sheet Music. If you play the harmonica, take a look at Harmonica Sheet Music.
Do you need a method book, studies or a collection of pieces?
A method book takes you step by step from your first notes and suits both lessons with a teacher and getting started on your own; this includes the Rubank series for oboe, bassoon, French horn and tuba. Studies are short pieces that focus on one technique, such as 18 Studies for oboe or tenor saxophone. Collections of pieces expand your repertoire, and titles such as First 50 Songs or 101 Simple Songs offer easy arrangements of familiar melodies.
For most titles, the difficulty is listed in the product specifications: beginner, easy, intermediate or advanced. Language matters mainly with method books, where you also read explanations, and the range includes titles in English, Czech, German and French. If you want to hear a piece or play along with a recording, choose a title with online audio recordings or a CD.
