Smaller toms have a higher, brighter tone and work well for brisk transitions. Larger sizes add more body and blend more smoothly with the floor tom. If you’re combining multiple toms, it’s worth considering the spacing between sizes so that each drum brings a different tone and doesn’t sound too similar.

Compatibility with the kit

Before purchasing, check the mounting system, finish, and type of hoops. A tom-tom must fit not only sonically but also practically: a stable mount, a comfortable angle, and the correct height have a major impact on your playing technique. When transporting your drums, it’s also worth considering a case that fits the exact dimensions of the drum.
