Arturia Microfreak Synthesizer

Arturia Microfreak is an experimental hybrid synthesizer that merges a multi-engine digital oscillator with a genuine analog filter in a compact desktop format. Its 25-note capacitive PCB keybed with polyphonic aftertouch responds to the amount of skin contact per key, enabling expressive control not found on conventional keyboards.

  • Explore 21 oscillator modes covering wavetable, FM, Karplus-Strong, granular, vocoder, and speech synthesis engines developed with Mutable Instruments and Noise Engineering
  • Analog state-variable filter with 12 dB/octave slope transitions between low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass modes, and can self-oscillate
  • 64-step polyphonic sequencer offers 4 automation tracks and randomization tools for generative creativity
  • Portable setup: weighs just 1.02 kg and can be USB-powered for studio or stage

Arturia MicroFreak: Experimental Hybrid Synthesizer

Pairing a digital multi-engine oscillator with a genuine analog filter, Arturia Microfreak condenses a full-featured synthesis workstation into a chassis smaller than a textbook. Musicians get 21 oscillator modes, paraphonic architecture with up to four voices, and a capacitive PCB keybed offering polyphonic aftertouch. A modulation matrix and 64-step sequencer transform simple ideas into evolving patterns, while USB power keeps the setup streamlined.

Polyphonic Aftertouch PCB Keyboard and 21-Oscillator Architecture

Few synthesizers at any price feature a flat PCB keybed with per-note polyphonic aftertouch; this model senses how much skin contacts each pad, letting players bend timbre for each finger. With oscillator modes designed by Mutable Instruments, Noise Engineering, and Arturia, the instrument traverses a sound palette that would otherwise require multiple devices.

Digital Oscillator Engines and Analog Filter Section

Where this instrument stands out is its oscillator section, which diverges from traditional hardware. Immediate hands-on control is available via three dedicated parameter knobs for each mode.

  • Oscillator Modes: 21 engines — wavetable, virtual analog, FM, Karplus-Strong, granular, vocoder, speech, modal resonator, and more
  • The analog state-variable filter at 12 dB/octave morphs smoothly between low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass, and can self-oscillate
  • Voice allocation is flexible, allowing monophonic, paraphonic, or unison operation with the analog filter shared across up to 4 voices
  • Real-time manipulation of sound textures becomes intuitive thanks to the panel layout.

Modulation Matrix, Envelopes, and Generative Sequencer

Besides a classic ADSR envelope and a six-waveform LFO, a cycling envelope acts as a multi-stage modulator or a free-running LFO with individually adjustable rise and fall times.

  • Modulation Matrix: 5 sources, 7 destinations — three destinations are user-assignable; each matrix slot can itself be modulated
  • The 64-step polyphonic sequencer stores 2 patterns per preset with 4 automation tracks for real-time knob recording
  • Arpeggiator modes include Up, Order, Random, and Pattern. Spice & Dice controls introduce dynamic randomization for generative pattern development

CV Integration, MIDI, and USB Power

Despite its compact size, this model's rear panel provides connectivity for modular rigs, vintage synths, and DAW setups.

  • CV/Gate/Pressure Outputs: 3.5 mm jacks — sequence and play Eurorack modules directly
  • Connect via MIDI using 3.5 mm TRS in/out and included breakout cables, enabling use as a polyphonic aftertouch controller
  • Dimensions: 311 × 233 × 55 mm, Weight: 1.02 kg — USB bus power simplifies power management in any studio

Sound Designers, Electronic Producers, and Curious Beginners

Producers working in techno, ambient, or IDM can utilize granular engines and the sequencer to create evolving patterns. Beginners benefit from the OLED display and 320 factory presets, each showcasing detailed sound design. Live performers in need of a compact synth with polyphonic aftertouch gain a flexible tool for expressive play.

Arturia and the Evolution of the Freak Series

First launched in 2019, this instrument built on Arturia’s legacy from the V Collection. MusicTech named it Gear of the Year and users have enjoyed several free firmware upgrades, including vocoder, sampling, and granular engines. MusicRadar declared it Best Mini Synth in 2024, and the series has since expanded with the larger MiniFreak.

Number of Keys

Number of Keys: 25

This instrument has 25 keys, equivalent to 2 octaves, providing a wide range of tones for a variety of musical applications.

Aftertouch

Aftertouch: Yes

Aftertouch technology on the keys allows musicians to add a new level of expression to their playing. When a key reaches the bottom of its stroke, the pressure exerted on the key can continue to be sensed and used to control various aspects of the sound, such as vibrato, volume, or tone modulation.

Polyphony

Polyphony: 1

This instrument is monophonic, meaning it plays only one note, which cannot be combined simultaneously with another.

LFO: 1

An LFO, or low frequency oscillator, brings electronic sound to life. It adds movement and interest to synthetic sounds and effects, playing an important role in both subtle synthesis and bold sound design. However, you won't hear the LFO itself because it acts as a modulator. This means that it does not directly affect the audio signal, but adjusts other parameters such as oscillator pitch and filter clipping.

Envelope

  • Cycling Envelope
  • ADSR

Oscillators: Yes

A powerful oscillator system allows users to create rich and variable sound textures. Oscillators can generate a variety of waveforms, including sine, square, triangle, and noise, allowing for creativity and experimentation.

Modulation: Yes

Modulation allows you to change different aspects of the sound in real time, opening up a wide range of creative possibilities. For example, it can affect the pitch of the sound, creating a vibrato effect, or it can change the amplitude of the signal, creating a tremolo effect. It can also adjust filtering to create smooth transitions between frequency bands and dynamic textures. Modulation can also be used to change the character of the sound depending on the time or intensity of playing, giving the sound a lively and moving character.

Sequencer: Yes

The sequencer provides musicians with a tool for composing and arranging music, allowing them to create and edit musical sequences. This feature allows you to record and play back repeating patterns. This makes it easy to create complex rhythms and melodies. The sequencer also allows you to layer different musical elements on top of each other, sync with other devices, and adjust parameters in real time. This flexibility makes the sequencer an invaluable tool for producing music, experimenting with new sounds and creating original compositions.

Arpeggiator: Yes

The Arpeggiator transforms chords into sequences of individual notes played in various rhythmic and melodic patterns. Instead of playing the chords as a harmonic whole, the Arpeggiator breaks the chords into individual notes and plays them sequentially according to the selected algorithm.

Headphone Output: Yes

The headphone output allows direct connection of headphones for private listening. This output provides a convenient way to enjoy the sound without disturbing others or ambient noise.

  • Clock IN (3,5 mm TS)
  • MIDI IN

Outputs

  • MIDI OUT
  • Headphone/Line Jack 6,3 mm TRS
  • CV (CV, Gate, Pressure)

V kombinácii s grooveboxom a efektmi z neho vzniká živý DAWless setup, kde človek nemusí riešiť obrazovku, ale jednoducho hrá, mutuje patterny a nechá hudbu plynúť.
