Arturia MiniFreak 49 Synthesizer
The Arturia MiniFreak 49 is a 6-voice hybrid synthesizer that pairs two digital sound engines with per-voice analog filters, all under the fingers of a 49-key semi-weighted keybed. An touch matrix turns modulation, preset browsing and performance gestures into a single pressure-sensitive surface, while Filter FM and Voice Panning open new harmonic and spatial territory. Bundled MiniFreak V software keeps every patch in lockstep between hardware and DAW.
- 49 full-size semi-weighted keys with velocity and mono aftertouch for expressive two-handed playing
- Two digital engines plus per-voice analog state-variable filters with audio-rate Filter FM
- 256 MB of sample and wavetable memory — eight times the original MiniFreak — with custom user imports
- 64-step sequencer, performance arpeggiator with Spice & Dice, and three stereo FX slots with 13 algorithms each
MiniFreak 49 — Hybrid Synthesizer With a Pressure-Sensitive Touch Matrix
The Arturia MiniFreak 49 is a 6-voice hybrid synthesizer built around two digital sound engines, per-voice analog state-variable filters and a 49-key full-size semi-weighted keybed. Engine 1 and Engine 2 can be routed independently or chained so Engine 2 processes Engine 1, while external audio enters the same voice architecture for further shaping. This instrument is the right choice for keyboard players who want a stage-ready instrument with the immediacy of a hardware sound-design lab and tight DAW integration. Every preset, modulation routing and performance gesture is mirrored in the bundled MiniFreak V.
What Sets the MiniFreak 49 Apart
The touch matrix is the headline addition: a pressure-sensitive surface that handles modulation routing, preset browsing, the visualizer and a new Freak Control performance layer in one gesture. Audio-rate Filter FM lets either engine modulate the analog filter cutoff at audio rate, opening metallic, vocal-like and abrasive textures that the original MiniFreak could not reach. Voice Panning distributes all six voices across the stereo field from a single 270° control, while 256 MB of sample and wavetable memory — eight times the original — opens the door to user-imported sounds.
Sound Engine — Two Digital Engines and Analog Filters
The hybrid architecture is what gives this model its broad sonic range: digital flexibility on the oscillator side, analog weight on the filter side.
- Polyphony: 6 voices — enough for chords, layered sequences and stacked arpeggios
- Digital Engines: 2 engines — virtual analog, FM, wavetable, granular, sample-based and physical modeling
- Analog Filter: per-voice state-variable, LP/BP/HP — resonance reaches self-oscillation, with audio-rate Filter FM from either engine
- Sample and Wavetable Memory holds 256 MB of user-imported sounds — eight times the capacity of the original MiniFreak
Keyboard and Performance Controls
A full-size keybed with velocity and mono aftertouch gives the MiniFreak 49 the feel of a serious performance instrument rather than a compact controller.
- Keys: 49 full-size semi-weighted keys — room for two-handed playing, extended chord voicings and walking basslines
- Aftertouch: mono — opens Timbre, Filter FM and other parameters as the player leans in
- Wheels: aluminum pitch and modulation wheels — physical control for bends, vibrato and expressive modulation
- Touch Matrix: pressure-sensitive surface — modulation, preset browsing, visualizer and Freak Control in one place
Sequencing, Effects and Modulation Architecture
Every voice carries its own envelope, cycling envelope and dual LFOs, so modulation stays deep even on simple patches.
- Envelopes: 1 ADSR + 1 cycling envelope per voice — cycling envelope extends to audio rate for rhythmic and timbral movement
- LFOs: 2 per voice with custom shapes — draw custom LFO curves directly on the touch matrix
- Sequencer: 64 steps with 4 modulation lanes — record real-time or step-by-step, automate filter, envelope and FX
- Effects — 3 stereo FX slots with 13 algorithms each, including chorus, reverb, distortion, Super Unison and two vocoders
Who the MiniFreak 49 Is Built For
The MiniFreak 49 is the right choice for producers, performers and sound designers who want a single instrument that covers stage playing, studio sound design and live sequencing. Keyboard players moving up from a 37-key setup will find the four-octave range opens up two-handed passages and walking basslines, while mono aftertouch rewards expressive playing in leads, pads and brass patches. Sound designers get a fast workflow through the touch-sensitive mod matrix, custom sample and wavetable import, and audio-rate Filter FM that pushes the analog filter into vocal-like territory. Live performers benefit from Voice Panning, the 64-step sequencer with four modulation lanes, and the performance arpeggiator with Spice & Dice for on-the-fly variation.
Arturia and the Freak Formula
Arturia built its reputation on faithful analog emulations and tightly integrated software/hardware instruments, and the Freak line extends that philosophy into algorithmic and hybrid territory. The MiniFreak 49 expands the original formula with full-size semi-weighted keys, an aluminum wheel set, the touch matrix and a redesigned analog circuit that enables Filter FM and stereo voice spread. Algorithms inside the digital engines come from Arturia alongside collaborators Mutable Instruments and Noise Engineering, and the bundled MiniFreak V plug-in keeps presets and modulation routing in sync between hardware and DAW.
Number of Keys: 49
This instrument has 49 keys, equivalent to 4 octaves, providing a wide range of tones for a variety of musical applications.
Keyboard Type
- Semi-weighted
- Velocity sensitive
Aftertouch: Yes
Aftertouch technology on the keys allows musicians to add a new level of expression to their playing. When a key reaches the bottom of its stroke, the pressure exerted on the key can continue to be sensed and used to control various aspects of the sound, such as vibrato, volume, or tone modulation.
Polyphony: 6
The polyphony of this instrument allows up to <%=tp_value % notes to be played simultaneously, providing rich and complex musical possibilities.
LFO: Yes
An LFO, or low frequency oscillator, brings electronic sound to life. It adds movement and interest to synthetic sounds and effects, playing an important role in both subtle synthesis and bold sound design. However, you won't hear the LFO itself because it acts as a modulator. This means that it does not directly affect the audio signal, but adjusts other parameters such as oscillator pitch and filter clipping.
Envelope
- ADSR
- Cycling Envelope
Oscillators: Yes
A powerful oscillator system allows users to create rich and variable sound textures. Oscillators can generate a variety of waveforms, including sine, square, triangle, and noise, allowing for creativity and experimentation.
Pitch Bend: Yes
The Pitch Bend allows smooth pitch changes, adding expressiveness to musical expression. Often used to create effects such as glissando or vibrato, this feature allows the player to make subtle or dramatic changes to the sound in real time. Pitch bend allows musicians to create smooth transitions between notes, increasing the dynamics and expressiveness of their performances.
Modulation: Yes
Modulation allows you to change different aspects of the sound in real time, opening up a wide range of creative possibilities. For example, it can affect the pitch of the sound, creating a vibrato effect, or it can change the amplitude of the signal, creating a tremolo effect. It can also adjust filtering to create smooth transitions between frequency bands and dynamic textures. Modulation can also be used to change the character of the sound depending on the time or intensity of playing, giving the sound a lively and moving character.
Arpeggiator: Yes
The Arpeggiator transforms chords into sequences of individual notes played in various rhythmic and melodic patterns. Instead of playing the chords as a harmonic whole, the Arpeggiator breaks the chords into individual notes and plays them sequentially according to the selected algorithm.
