AUX Cables

An AUX cable is a stereo cable with a 3.5 mm jack (mini jack) connector at each end. You can use it to connect your phone, laptop or music player to a car stereo, powered speaker, mixer or headphone amplifier. What length of AUX cable should you choose?

The most common AUX cable lengths here are 1.5 m and 3 m. For use in a car, with a speaker on your desk or between two devices sitting next to each other, 1 to 1.5 m is usually enough. Short cables from 15 to 60 cm are useful for connecting synthesizers, grooveboxes and effects in the same setup without tangles. Use a cable measuring 3 to 6 m when your sound source is further away from the mixer or speaker.

Straight or right-angle connector?

A straight connector fits most devices. A right-angle connector sticks out less from your phone, music player or car dashboard, so the cable puts less strain on the socket when it moves. When do you need a TRRS cable instead of a standard stereo cable?

A standard AUX cable has a TRS connector with three contacts: left channel, right channel and ground. It carries stereo sound, but no microphone signal. A TRRS connector has four contacts and is found on phones and tablets with a shared socket for headphones with a microphone. Rode SC9 and SC10 cables have a TRRS connector at both ends.

What if your device has a connector other than 3.5 mm?
