Bassoon and Oboe Stands
A bassoon is a long, heavy instrument, and leaning it against a chair during a rehearsal or concert break can easily leave it scratched or cause it to tip over. A bassoon stand keeps it upright and within reach, so you can pick it up after the break and carry on playing. The range of bassoon and oboe stands includes models for bassoon and contrabassoon, as well as an oboe peg, from König & Meyer, Hercules and Revoltage. In the stand, the bassoon rests against a soft support, with its lower end sitting in a cup or on an adjustable base rest. Most stands fold down so you can take them with you.
Which bassoon stand should you choose?
- Bassoon stand – You can adjust the König & Meyer 150/1 to a height of 700 to 1 200 mm and change the angle and width of its support, from 57 to 87 mm, to fit your instrument. Rubber and felt pads protect the bassoon's finish, and the stand folds down into two parts.
- Stand for bassoon and bass clarinet – The Hercules DS561B has a base rest that you can adjust for a bassoon or bass clarinet, and it holds a bass clarinet with its floor peg either extended or retracted. The stand's height is 670 to 1 010 mm.
- Stand for bassoon and tenor saxophone – The Revoltage SS 3000 holds a tenor saxophone or a bassoon, making it useful if you play both instruments.
- Contrabassoon stand – The larger, heavier contrabassoon needs its own stand. The steel König & Meyer 15045 has a height of 700 to 1 200 mm and a large, soft felt support, and it also folds down into two parts.
How do you put your oboe down when you're not playing?
An oboe is lighter and shorter, so an instrument peg is enough to support it. The König & Meyer 17738 does not stand on its own: its M5 thread lets you screw it into a peg base or a König & Meyer peg holder, where it fits alongside pegs for other instruments. You place the oboe over the peg through its bell, keeping it upright so it cannot roll off a table.
What should you check when buying a bassoon stand?
First, check which instrument the stand is designed for – a contrabassoon needs its own stand, while the Hercules DS561B holds both a bassoon and a bass clarinet. Then compare the height range and check whether the support can be adjusted to the width of your bassoon. A soft felt or rubber support protects the finish from scratches. For travelling, a stand that folds down into two parts is useful: the König & Meyer 150/1 measures 645 mm in length when folded.
For your bassoon or oboe, you can also find bassoon and oboe reeds. You will find stands for bass clarinet and other clarinets on the clarinet stands page, and stands for other instruments in the wind instrument stands category.
