Bathory was a Swedish extreme metal band founded in Vällingby in 1983, named after the infamous Hungarian countess Elizabeth Báthory. Widely regarded as a pioneer of both black metal and Viking metal, Bathory’s early albums laid the foundation for Scandinavian black metal. The group rarely performed live and never toured, with founder Tomas Quorthon Forsberg as the creative force and often the only member. Bathory ended with Forsberg’s death in 2004.
