Bauhaus is an English rock band formed in Northampton in 1978, recognized as pioneers of gothic rock. Their signature sound blends a dark, atmospheric tone with elements of dub, glam rock, psychedelia, and funk. The lineup features Peter Murphy on vocals, Daniel Ash on guitar and saxophone, David J on bass, and Kevin Haskins on drums. Originally named Bauhaus 1919 after the German art school, they soon adopted the shorter name.
Their influential debut single "Bela Lugosi's Dead" and first album "In the Flat Field" helped define the gothic rock genre. Bauhaus expanded their musical palette on the album "Mask" and achieved UK mainstream success with "The Sky's Gone Out" and a popular cover of David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust." Despite internal tensions, the group released "Burning from the Inside" in 1983 before splitting up.
Following the breakup, members pursued new projects such as Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets, and solo work by Peter Murphy. Bauhaus reunited for tours in 1998, 2005 to 2008, and again in 2019 and 2022. Their legacy endures as one of the most influential bands in gothic and alternative rock music.
