Benny Golson

Benny Golson (1929–2024) was a leading American jazz tenor saxophonist, composer, and arranger, celebrated for his influential work in bebop and hard bop. Rising to prominence with Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie’s big bands, he became renowned for his writing before founding The Jazztet alongside trumpeter Art Farmer in 1959. Many of Golson’s compositions, such as I Remember Clifford, Blues March, Stablemates, Whisper Not, Along Came Betty, and Killer Joe, are considered jazz standards. Later in his career, he became a sought-after arranger for film and television. Golson is recognized as a major figure in jazz history and received the Grammy Trustees Award in 2021.
