Bijelo Dugme

Bijelo Dugme

Bijelo Dugme is a legendary Yugoslav rock band formed in Sarajevo in 1974. Widely regarded as the most popular and best-selling band in the history of former Yugoslavia, they are a defining symbol of the region's rock and popular music. Led by guitarist Goran Bregović, and featuring a line-up that included vocalist Željko Bebek, drummer Ipe Ivandić, keyboardist Vlado Pravdić, and bassist Zoran Redžić, the band first gained fame with their debut album Kad bi' bio bijelo dugme, known for its unique blend of Balkan folk and hard rock. Their signature sound, symphonic rock ballads, and poetic lyrics captured the hearts of audiences across the region, sparking what the press called Dugmemania. Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Bijelo Dugme adapted to changing musical trends, including new wave influences, and continued to release successful albums with different vocalists, notably Mladen Vojičić Tifa and later Alen Islamović. The band disbanded in 1989, but their music remained influential, celebrated for its musicianship and cultural impact, while also drawing criticism for blending rock and folk, which some saw as a precursor to turbo-folk. Bijelo Dugme reunited for major concerts in 2005 and marked its 50th anniversary with a tour in 2024. Their songs continue to resonate across the former Yugoslav republics and the band remains a lasting icon of Yugoslav cultural identity and nostalgia.
