Colored sand

Colored sand is a fine decorative sand you can use to fill a vase, candle holder, or glass bowl and create layers of color inside. You'll find 21 shades from Knorr Prandell: rich red, blue, green, and yellow; soft pink, lilac, and light blue; plus black, white, cream, gold, silver, and copper. The grain size of 0.1–0.5 mm allows the sand to pour evenly and spread easily. Each color comes in a 500 ml plastic jar with a screw-top lid, so you can safely store any leftover sand for your next project.

What can you use colored sand for?

Colored sand is most often used in glass containers: in vases, candle holders, and glass bowls, you can create stripes of different colors or a single-color base for a decoration. The manufacturer also recommends it for subtle surface effects and mixed-media techniques, where you can use it to create a textured background or a raised 3D effect on a painting or collage. For a painting, sprinkle the sand onto fresh glue or mix it into an acrylic medium, then gently shake off any excess sand once it has dried.

How do you layer sand in a vase?

To keep the layers neat, pour the sand slowly through a funnel or a rolled-up sheet of paper, keeping the opening close to the glass wall, and leave the container still between layers. To make wavy stripes, tilt the vase first to one side and then to the other as you pour. With contrasting colors such as turquoise and pink or black and white, even a thin layer creates a distinct separation between the colors. For a taller vase, plan on using several jars of the same color – each jar holds 500 ml.
