The Microscopic Septet is a jazz group formed in 1980 by saxophonist Phillip Johnston. Renowned for their inventive approach, they revitalized classic big band sounds from the 1930s and 1940s, becoming one of New York’s most distinctive ensembles of the 1980s and early 1990s. After disbanding in 1992, they reunited in 2006 and have performed regularly since, releasing several new albums on Cuneiform Records. The band is also recognized for performing the theme for NPR’s Fresh Air, composed by their pianist Joel Forrester.
