Cymande is a British funk band formed in 1971 by musicians from various Caribbean backgrounds. Their sound blends funk, soul, reggae, rock, African rhythms, calypso, and jazz, a style they called "nyah-rock." The band's name comes from a calypso word meaning "dove," symbolizing peace and love, and also titles one of their best-known songs. Though only active for a few years in the 1970s, Cymande's music found new life decades later when sampled by prominent rap artists. After reuniting in the 2010s, they released their latest album, Renascence, in January 2025.
