DJ Headphones

DJ headphones are used for cueing and checking the next track before sending it to the main output. A closed-back design helps isolate the cue mix from the loud sound system, while the earcups can often rotate for one-ear monitoring. When choosing, consider the headband clamping force, weight and comfort of the earpads during a longer set. The cable and connector must suit the mixer and the way you move behind the booth.

Volume and electrical specifications

Sensitivity and impedance affect how loud the headphones can play from a particular headphone output. A single figure does not show whether the cue mix will remain clear in a club, however; isolation and clean rhythm reproduction are also important. Start at a low level and increase the volume only as far as necessary for cueing.

Isolation without unnecessary pressure

Strong clamping force can improve passive attenuation, but becomes tiring over time. Soft, replaceable earpads extend the useful life of the headphones and are easier to maintain. Check the headband adjustment range before buying as well.

Construction for one-ear monitoring

• rotating or folding earcups must hold the chosen position;
• a detachable cable is easier to replace if damaged;
• a coiled cable provides extra reach without a long loose lead;
• the connector adapter should fit firmly in the headphone output;
• a hard case protects the hinges during transport.

Monitoring in a complete setup

Connect the headphones to a DJ mixer or compatible DJ controller. If you need to protect your equipment while travelling, choose a suitable size among cases for DJ equipment.

DJ headphones should keep the cue signal intelligible even beside a loud monitor. For DJ monitoring, good passive isolation is more practical than raising the volume to a level that tires your hearing.
