DJ Turntables

A DJ turntable is designed for precise track starts, manual tempo matching and, depending on your style, scratching. When choosing, compare direct and belt drive, speed stability, pitch adjustment range and tonearm construction. Check whether the cartridge and stylus are included or need to be selected separately. The setup also needs a mixer with a phono input or a suitable preamp.

Direct and belt drive

Direct drive transfers motor force straight to the platter and provides a faster start for DJ work. Belt drive is common for home listening but may not be the first choice for intensive record manipulation. Torque and the method of electronic speed control are also important.

Pitch, torque and speeds

The pitch fader range determines how far the tempo can be changed, and the zero point should be easy to read. Higher torque helps the platter return quickly to the chosen speed after being held by hand. Check the supported speeds, the option to lock the original tempo and the control direction you are accustomed to when playing.

Cartridge, stylus and slipmat

  • The cartridge must suit the tonearm and type of use.
  • Set tracking force according to the cartridge manufacturer's recommendation.
  • A slipmat makes it easier to hold and start the record by hand.
  • A cover protects the platter and tonearm during storage.
  • Secure the tonearm and use a rigid case for transport.

Setting the tonearm before the first record

Place the turntable level, balance the tonearm and set the tracking force for the cartridge. Incorrect force can reduce groove tracking and increase wear. If the model allows anti-skating and tonearm height adjustment, follow the manual for the particular turntable and cartridge combination.

Connecting it to a DJ setup

Connect two turntables to a suitable DJ mixer. For stable placement, you need a level DJ table with enough space and resistance to vibration. For a digital vinyl system, also check support for the interface and software.

A DJ turntable needs a stable motor, clearly readable pitch control and a tonearm that can be adjusted precisely. When a product is described as a DJ turntable, always check whether it is a complete unit with a cartridge.
