Double Bass Drum Pedals

A double pedal controls two beaters with your feet and expands the playing options on a single bass drum. The set includes a main and secondary pedal connected by a shaft, so it requires enough space and correct alignment. When choosing, consider the drive type, spring adjustment, footboard length and strength of the hoop clamp. Compatibility with the hi-hat stand and the position of other hardware is also important.

Response and adjustment options

A lighter action may make fast strokes easier to practise, while a firmer setting provides more noticeable resistance underfoot. Adjust the springs carefully in small steps and compare both sides. Beater angle and distance from the head affect both power and travel length.

Check before the first rehearsal

  • the width of the space between the bass drum pedal and hi-hat stand;
  • play in the connecting shaft and tightness of the screws;
  • even position of both beaters relative to the head;
  • anti-slip elements or a rug under the set;
  • a case that fits the dimensions of both pedals.

Single pedal or double setup

One pedal is sufficient for basic technique and most styles. A double model makes sense when the music requires regular alternation of both feet. A wider selection, including single models, can be found among bass drum pedals; a drum rug helps keep the whole setup stable.
