Elliott Smith was an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known for his deeply introspective lyrics and signature soft, multi-layered vocal style. Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1969 and primarily raised in Texas, he later found a creative home in Portland, Oregon, where he first gained recognition as part of the band Heatmiser. Smith launched his solo career in 1994 with releases on independent labels before signing with DreamWorks Records. His song Miss Misery, featured in the film Good Will Hunting, earned him an Academy Award nomination and brought him wider acclaim. Smith’s music often reflected his personal struggles with addiction and mental health issues. He died in Los Angeles in 2003 at the age of thirty-four while working on what became his final album, From a Basement on the Hill, which was released after his death.
