Eric Dolphy was an innovative American jazz musician known for his mastery of alto saxophone, bass clarinet, and flute. Active in the mid twentieth century, he helped introduce the bass clarinet to jazz and expanded the expressive possibilities of the alto saxophone. Dolphy’s improvisations featured wide intervals and unpredictable melodic leaps, using extended techniques to create sounds inspired by voices and nature. While often associated with free jazz, his work remained grounded in complex bebop harmony. As a composer and bandleader, Dolphy was influential in shaping the sound and direction of modern jazz.
