Free Faces

Free Faces

Free Faces was a Slovak rock band formed in 1997, originally as a nu jazz instrumental trio consisting of Oskar Rózsa, Andrej Šeban, and Marcel Buntaj. In early 1998, singer Maroš Hečko joined the group with the idea of turning beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti's work into music, leading to their debut EP I Am Waiting: Free Faces for Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Motivated by early success, the group continued and released their first album, Almost True Story, in 1998, earning positive reviews and several national music awards the following year. Despite initial ambitions for international performances, most of these plans did not materialize. During the creation of their second album, the band experienced internal disagreements, mainly about whether to use English or Slovak lyrics. They eventually finished the double album La Belle Epoque in 2001, which also received critical and professional recognition, including awards for album artwork and group of the year. After a final summer tour, the band parted ways due to members' other professional commitments. The group briefly reunited in 2009 to contribute an interpretation of Karel Kryl’s song Pasážová revolta for a creative competition but did not return permanently. The band name Free Faces originally evolved from the trio's early phase, when they were also known as Three Faces. Their early instrumental works were later released under the name Šeban – Rózsa – Buntaj on the album Milión bohov in 1999.
