Glitter yarn

Glitter yarn contains metallic lurex fibres, has a metallic finish or features tiny sequins that make your knitting shimmer in the light. Here you’ll find yarn for knitting and crochet from Yarn Art, Himalaya, Nazli Gelin, Rozetti and Austermann. Most are blends of cotton or polyamide with lurex, with a smaller selection of fine yarns with sequins. They’re suitable for festive jumpers, hats and summer tops, as well as Christmas ornaments and decorations.

What’s the difference between lurex, metallic and sequinned yarn?

The difference lies in how the sparkle is added to the yarn and how much it shows in the finished fabric.

• Yarn with lurex — a fine metallic fibre is twisted together with cotton or polyamide to give your knitting a subtle shimmer: Yarn Art Elegance (cotton with lurex, 130 m per 50 g), Yarn Art Bright (polyamide with lurex, 340 m per 90 g), Yarn Art Sparkle (160 m per 25 g) and Nazli Gelin Garden Metallic (Egyptian cotton, 280 m per 50 g).
• Yarn with glitter fibres — Himalaya Konfeti combines cotton, polyamide and a sparkling fibre, with 235 m per 50 g.
• Metallic yarn — Yarn Art Metallic Club is a polyester yarn with a shiny metallic finish along its entire length. Each ball weighs 180 g and contains 55 m of yarn, and is worked with a 6 mm crochet hook.
• Sequinned yarn — tiny sequins are attached to a fine yarn: Himalaya Yildiz (393 m per 25 g), Rozetti Cotton Gold (cotton, 183 m per 25 g), Austermann Pailletten (185 m per 25 g) and Yarn Art Cotton Gold Paillettes.

What can you knit or crochet with glitter yarn?

Cotton blends with lurex, such as Yarn Art Elegance and Himalaya Konfeti, are used to knit summer tops, vests and lightweight jumpers on 2.75 to 4 mm needles. You’ll find more yarns for summer projects in the summer yarn category.

Fine yarns with sequins and lurex have a length of 160 to 393 m per 25 g. They’re often knitted together with another yarn: the main yarn gives the fabric warmth and colour, while the glitter yarn adds sparkle. This lets you knit a festive jumper, hat or scarf using your favourite pattern.
