Large canvases for painting
Large canvases for painting are for you when you want to paint a picture for the wall, a bigger abstract or a landscape that won't fit on a standard size. Here you'll find canvases with the longer side from 80 to 150 cm: square 80 × 80 and 100 × 100 cm, rectangular 80 × 100 to 100 × 140 cm and narrow panoramic 40 × 120 and 50 × 150 cm. Most of them come stretched on a wooden frame, so you can start painting as soon as you unpack them. You choose from the Kreul Basic Line, Premium Line and 3D ranges and from Dielo Student Line and Premium Line, all made of 100 % cotton. You'll find smaller sizes, black canvases and canvas on a roll among all our painting canvases.
What size of large canvas should you choose?
First measure the wall where the painting is going to hang and leave some free space around it. Rectangles of 80 × 100, 100 × 120 and 100 × 140 cm are classic formats for both landscapes and portraits. A 100 × 100 cm square suits abstract work and paintings for a modern interior. Use the panoramic 70 × 140 and 50 × 150 cm sizes above a sofa, bed or chest of drawers, where you need a wide, low painting.
How do the Student Line, Basic Line, Premium Line and 3D canvases differ?
| Range | Canvas | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Dielo Student Line | cotton 300 g/m² | practice, school and your first large formats |
| Kreul Basic Line | cotton 380 g/m², 4× gesso-primed | regular painting with acrylics, oils and gouache |
| Dielo Premium Line | cotton 380 g/m² | canvas 80 g/m² denser than the Student Line |
| Kreul Premium Line | cotton 400 g/m² | heavier canvas for paintings with a thick layer of paint |
| Kreul 3D | cotton on a deep-edge frame | a painting you hang without a frame and paint around the sides |
A higher weight means a denser, stronger fabric that holds its tension better on a large frame. If you're painting a large format for the first time, Student Line is enough; for a painting you want to exhibit, go for Basic or Premium Line.
What paints can you use on a large canvas?
Kreul and Dielo canvases are made for acrylic paints, oils and gouache. According to the manufacturer, Kreul Basic Line is primed four times, so you apply the paint directly without any extra ground. With a large format, count on using more paint and wider brushes. Put a canvas taller than one metre on a sturdy studio painting easel and before you buy, check what canvas height the easel can hold.
