Mark Lanegan

Mark Lanegan

Mark Lanegan (1964–2022) was an influential American singer and songwriter known for his deep, gritty baritone voice and his role in shaping the grunge and alternative rock scenes. He first gained recognition as the frontman of Screaming Trees, a pioneering grunge band, releasing seven albums before their breakup in 2000. Lanegan also became a key collaborator with Queens of the Stone Age and co-founded The Gutter Twins with Greg Dulli. His solo career was equally prolific, spanning twelve studio albums that showcased his dark, soulful style. He also released notable collaborations with Isobel Campbell and Duke Garwood. Throughout his career, Lanegan worked with a range of artists including Kurt Cobain, Mad Season, Moby, Soulsavers, Tinariwen, and the Manic Street Preachers. Lanegan’s voice drew comparisons to Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Nick Cave, admired for its raw, expressive quality. Despite personal struggles with addiction, he achieved over a decade of sobriety and authored two highly regarded memoirs. In his later years, Lanegan settled in Ireland, where he passed away at the age of 57.
