Mayhem is a seminal Norwegian black metal band formed in Oslo in 1984, widely regarded as one of the most influential pioneers of the genre. Their early years were marked by extreme and controversial live performances, as well as tragic events that included the suicide of vocalist Per Yngve Ohlin in 1991 and the murder of guitarist Øystein Aarseth in 1993. Linked to the notorious Norwegian black metal scene of the early 1990s, Mayhem gained a cult following and released their landmark debut album, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, which remains a classic in black metal history. After a brief hiatus, the band was reformed by original members Jan Axel Blomberg and Jørn Stubberud, continuing with new members and exploring more experimental sounds. Their album Ordo Ad Chao won the Spellemann Award for Best Heavy Metal Album in 2007, solidifying their legacy as innovators of extreme metal.
