Pantera is an American heavy metal band formed in 1981 in Arlington, Texas by brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. The classic lineup featured vocalist Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown, joining the Abbott brothers through the 1980s. Initially a glam metal group, Pantera shifted to a heavier sound in the late 1980s, becoming pioneers of groove metal with their influential albums Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, and Far Beyond Driven. The band achieved critical and commercial success throughout the 1990s, selling around 20 million records worldwide and earning four Grammy nominations.
Internal strife and lineup challenges led to their breakup in 2003. The tragic deaths of Dimebag Darrell in 2004 and Vinnie Paul in 2018 left Anselmo and Brown as the remaining members of the classic lineup. In 2022, Pantera began performing again with Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante joining as touring members. Pantera remains one of metal’s most influential and respected acts, known for their powerful sound and enduring legacy.
