Phil Collins is an English musician, songwriter, record producer and actor, best known as the drummer and later lead singer of the rock band Genesis, and as a highly successful solo artist. Born in London in 1951, Collins started playing drums and acting in his childhood, landing an early role as the Artful Dodger in Oliver!. He joined Genesis as drummer in 1970 and became lead vocalist in 1975, guiding the band through some of its most popular years.
During the 1980s, Collins launched a major solo career with hits like In the Air Tonight, Against All Odds, Sussudio and Another Day in Paradise. His songs defined pop and adult contemporary music of the era, and his unique gated drum sound became legendary. He also played at both Live Aid concerts in 1985 and appeared in film and television.
Collins has sold over 150 million records worldwide from his solo work and with Genesis, putting him among the world’s best-selling artists alongside Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. His awards include eight Grammys, six Brit Awards, two Golden Globes, an Academy Award, and a Disney Legend Award. He also wrote music for Disney’s Tarzan, earning an Oscar for You’ll Be in My Heart.
Recognized as one of the top drummers in rock history, Collins was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Genesis and has been honored with stars, awards, and hall of fame inductions across the industry.
