A reed vibrates in the air stream and helps create the sound of a saxophone or clarinet, so its choice affects every attack. It must suit the instrument, mouthpiece and playing style rather than just carry a familiar strength number. Compare the material, profile or cut and the number of reeds in the pack as well. A suitable reed responds easily while still giving the tone enough support.

Start with the correct instrument

Reed formats are not interchangeable. For saxophone, choose soprano saxophone reeds, alto saxophone reeds, tenor saxophone reeds or baritone saxophone reeds. Clarinet reeds have their own dimensions, so also check the exact clarinet and mouthpiece specified for the product.

How to compare strengths

A lower number usually means a softer reed that speaks more easily, while a higher number indicates a firmer reed with more resistance. Scales are not identical across manufacturers. Mouthpiece opening and shape, embouchure and playing experience all affect the result, so the number alone is not a universal prescription. When changing brand or range, consult the manufacturer's strength chart and test a smaller pack first.

Natural cane or synthetic

• Natural cane offers a familiar playing feel, although individual reeds can vary slightly. Wet it before playing and allow it to dry flat afterwards.
• Synthetic material tends to be more consistent and needs different preparation. Its feel and strength scale may differ from natural cane.

Profile, cut and tip thickness further shape the response. Follow the manufacturer's information and judge how the model works with your mouthpiece. A small pack is practical for testing; once confirmed, choose a pack size that suits how often you play.

Adjustment is for experienced hands

An experienced player may carefully level or adjust a natural reed that responds unevenly. Reed adjustment tools are made for controlled work on the material, but they are not essential beginner equipment. For a first choice, it is safer to find a compatible reed and comfortable strength that work without extra alteration.
