This is a question everyone who takes music seriously asks—whether you're just starting out or want to improve your playing. The truth is, the difference between guitars isn't just about price. It's about materials, craftsmanship, sound, and most importantly, how the instrument "feels in your hands". We'll help you understand what you're really getting for the money and why sometimes you can feel the difference after the very first chord.
Cheap vs. expensive guitar: Is it worth investing in a better model or is a basic one enough?

Wondering whether a cheap guitar is enough or if it’s worth investing in a more expensive model? We’ll show you what materials and build quality affect tone and playability, and when it really pays off to go for quality.

Materials matter more than you might think

More expensive guitars are usually made from solid, resonant woods such as spruce, cedar, mahogany or maple. These materials sound fuller, with more depth and sustain, and they mature over time. Their response to playing is more natural, dynamic and detailed.

Cheaper models (for example, in the under €300 category) use laminated basswood or nato, which may not have such rich sound, but with good craftsmanship they can be pleasantly surprising.

The workmanship affects your playing more than you realise

Neck, fretboard, body shape, finish — all these details affect how the instrument feels when you play it. More expensive models usually come better set up straight from the factory. On the other hand, cheaper guitars often need some fine-tuning: string height, fretboard adjustment, fret inspection. Fortunately, this can also be fixed with a small investment at a technician and can significantly improve the overall feel of the instrument.

Hardware and electronics aren't just a bonus

If you play an electric guitar, the pickups, bridge, tuning machines and nut are critically important. For example, a humbucker on the bridge will give you a thick tone for solos, while single-coils give a crystal-clear sound for clean lines or funky playing. And if you're tuning every 15 minutes, it's not your ear’s fault – it's the machine.

A cheaper guitar can be a smart start if you know what you're looking for

Not everyone needs a Rolls-Royce of guitars right away. If you're a beginner or need a second instrument for travelling, something simpler will do – but it still needs to be reliable and usable.

That’s exactly what we kept in mind when developing Pasadena guitars. It's a brand that offers a sensible compromise – high-quality materials (e.g. basswood, Canadian maple, rosewood), modern design and versatility. For example, the Pasadena ST-11 HSS can handle everything from blues to rock thanks to a combo of two single coils and one humbucker. Or acoustic dreadnoughts and classicals that sound warm, clear, and stay in tune.

A more expensive guitar is an instrument that grows with you

Once you know you want to commit to playing and practice regularly, investing in a higher-quality instrument makes sense. You'll get a clear tone, longer sustain, comfort when playing and inspiration. When an instrument responds precisely to your playing, it's easier to create.

Often, a more expensive guitar will boost your motivation because you simply enjoy picking it up.

If you’re not sure what fits you, come and try it out

We all have different hands, playing styles, and ears. What suits one guitarist might not work for another. That’s why we always recommend trying a guitar in person first.

Feel free to visit us. In our showrooms, we have models that you can try out for yourself. We have both electric guitars and acoustic guitars. One of our team members who really knows their instruments will be happy to help you choose.

Conclusion? Choose an instrument that will draw you back to music

Even a cheaper guitar can serve you well if it is properly tuned. And even the most expensive model won’t guarantee anything if you don’t actually play it. Choose with your head and your heart. And if you need advice, stop by and we’ll be happy to help you.
