Snare Drum Wires

Snare wires are thin wires stretched beneath the resonant head of a snare drum. When pulled against the head, they give the drum its characteristic crisp, sharp sound. When choosing, consider the drum diameter, number of wires and material, as these affect both sensitivity and tone.

Diameter and number of wires

The snare wires must match the diameter of your snare drum, most commonly 14 inches. The range includes PureSound or Tama models with 20, 24 and 30 wires. More wires create a denser and more sensitive sound, while fewer wires allow more of the drum's own tone to stand out.

TypeWhat to consider
Steel snare wiresSound bright and sharp
Brass snare wiresSound warmer and softer
Mounting straps, such as PureSound MT4 or nylon models from GibraltarHold the wires in the mechanism; inspect them during replacement

What to check before replacement

  1. The drum diameter and length of the snare wires.
  2. The number of wires and material according to the desired sound.
  3. The condition of the straps and attachments for wear.
  4. Whether the snare-strainer mechanism works correctly.

Replacing and adjusting snare wires

Fit the wires so they are centred beneath the resonant head and make even contact. Increase the tension gradually: excessive tension chokes the sound, while insufficient tension causes unnecessary buzzing. After replacement, test the drum at different striking strengths and fine-tune the tension for the sound you want.

If the wires do not attach correctly, check the snare strainers and tension mechanisms. You can find other drum parts in the drum replacement parts category, including drum hoops and lugs.
