Snare Stands

A snare stand holds the drum in a position that allows a free stroke and natural hand posture. The basket must accommodate the drum diameter without pressing on the shell, and its rubber supports should not damp resonance more than necessary. When choosing, consider the height range, tilt angle and stability of the base. A deeper or heavier drum needs a sufficiently strong centre mechanism.

Diameter, depth and minimum height

The basket range must suit the drum diameter, while the minimum height must suit its depth. With a deep snare, a standard stand may be too high even when fully lowered, while a smaller drum requires arms that can be drawn in securely. Compare the dimensions with the stand manufacturer's specifications rather than relying only on a photograph.

Basket and angle adjustment

Set the basket arms so they hold the drum securely without forcing it. A stepless joint allows precise tilt adjustment, while a geared mechanism holds fixed steps. The levers should remain accessible after the drum has been placed in the basket.

Height for a kit and standalone playing

• When seated, set the top head at a comfortable height above your thighs.
• Marching or orchestral playing may require a higher adjustment range.
• The tripod base must not interfere with the pedals.
• Use non-slip feet on a clean, level surface.
• Release the mechanisms during transport and protect the threads from impacts.

Position in the drum kit

Position the stand in relation to the drum throne and hi-hat stand so your hands and feet do not restrict one another. A drum rug can stabilise the whole setup.

Snare stands also differ in their lowest working height. A low stand is important for a deeper drum or lower seating position, while standalone orchestral playing may require a higher range.
