The Kinks were an English rock band formed in London in 1963 by brothers Ray and Dave Davies with Pete Quaife. Known as one of the most influential bands of the 1960s, they rose to fame with the groundbreaking hit You Really Got Me, which topped the UK charts and reached the US top 10. The Kinks blended American rhythm and blues with British styles like music hall and folk, often reflecting and satirizing English life in their lyrics. Key albums such as The Village Green Preservation Society, Lola Versus Powerman, and Muswell Hillbillies showcase this unique approach. Despite lineup changes and a US touring ban in the mid-1960s, the band achieved international success, scoring multiple top 20 singles and gold albums, with over 50 million records sold worldwide. Their influence has endured through covers by other artists and recognition from later Britpop groups like Blur and Oasis. The Kinks were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
