Catherine Wheel was an English alternative rock band formed in Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft, active from 1990 to 2000. Known for their evolution from shoegaze to a heavier rock sound, they released five albums over their career. Their 1992 debut Ferment gained early attention, while the following year’s album Chrome and its single Crank marked the band’s peak success. The group received MTV airplay and is remembered for tracks like Judy Staring at the Sun featuring Tanya Donelly. While they never achieved major commercial success in the UK, Catherine Wheel remains a cult favorite among fans of alternative rock and shoegaze.
