Traffic was an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1967 by Jim Capaldi, Steve Winwood, Chris Wood, and Dave Mason. Starting with a psychedelic rock style, the group quickly broadened their sound by experimenting with instruments like the Mellotron, harpsichord, sitar, and various reeds, blending rock with jazz and improvisation.
They found early success in the UK with their debut album Mr. Fantasy and singles like Paper Sun and Hole in My Shoe. Their 1968 self-titled album included Feelin' Alright, which became a widely covered classic. After some lineup changes and a brief split, the band reunited in 1970, achieving greater success in the United States with albums such as John Barleycorn Must Die and The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, the latter becoming a staple of American FM radio.
Traffic was known for its evolving, eclectic sound and skilled musicianship. The band had several breakups and reunions, with members also finding solo success, especially Steve Winwood. In 1994, Capaldi and Winwood briefly revived Traffic for a final album and tour. The band’s influential legacy was recognized with their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
