Waterproof speakers

A waterproof speaker is a portable Bluetooth speaker rated IP67, IP68 or IPX7, so rain, the shower or full submersion in water won't harm it. With it, you can play music from your phone in the bathroom, by the pool, on the beach, on a boat and on a canoe trip down the river. Here you'll find small speakers with a strap or carabiner as well as large models for the whole group. You can choose from speakers by JBL, Marshall, Bose, Sony, Tribit and Anker Soundcore.

What do IP67, IP68 and IPX7 mean on a speaker?

The second digit of the IP rating tells you how well the speaker resists water. A 7 means it can be submerged at a depth of 1 metre for 30 minutes; an 8 means longer or deeper submersion, as specified by the manufacturer. The first digit 6 in IP67 and IP68 means complete protection against dust and sand, while IPX7 speakers were not tested for dust. Speakers rated IPX4 to IPX6 only withstand splashing water and rain, so they aren't listed here – you'll find them among all portable speakers.

Which waterproof speaker for the shower, pool or beach?

As a shower speaker or for your bike, a small model with a strap or carabiner works well, for example the JBL Clip 5, JBL GO 4, Bose SoundLink Micro or Tribit StormBox Micro 2. At the beach and by the pool, take a mid-sized model with a bigger battery, such as the JBL Flip 7, JBL Charge 6, Marshall Emberton III or Bose SoundLink Flex. For a bigger group by the water, there are the JBL Xtreme 4, JBL Boombox 4, Marshall Middleton II, Bose SoundLink Max and Sony ULT Field 7. How do you look after a waterproof speaker?

IP ratings are tested in fresh water. After swimming in the sea or in a chlorinated pool, rinse the speaker with clean water and let it dry. The port must be dry before charging, and if the model has a rubber flap, always close it near water. On a boat or paddleboard, clip it on with the strap or carabiner so it doesn't end up at the bottom.
