Craft wire

Craft wire is thin, flexible wire for jewellery making, flower arranging and homemade decorations. On this page, you’ll find Knorr Prandell wire in diameters from 0.25 to 1.8 mm – gold, silver, copper, coloured lacquered wire and green floral wire. It comes on spools and reels in lengths from 4 to 185 m, or as straight stem wire measuring 15 to 40 cm long. You can choose wire for earrings and pendants, for tying bouquets and wreaths, or for Christmas ornaments and hanging mobiles.

Which craft wire should you choose?

Choose the type of wire to suit what you want to make: a piece of jewellery, a floral arrangement or a decoration.

  • Gold, silver and copper wire (Ø 0.25 – 1.2 mm) – for jewellery, wrapping beads and delicate ornaments.
  • Lacquered wire (Ø 0.5 mm, 50 and 150 m) – with a coloured finish in red, black, emerald green, silver and gold.
  • Floral binding wire on a wooden stick (Ø 0.5 and 0.65 mm, 35 – 50 m) – for wreaths and bouquets, also in moss green, anthracite or pink.
  • Floral wire (Ø 0.35 mm × 100 m) – fine wire on a spool for tying flowers, in moss green, anthracite and reddish brown.
  • Stem wire (Ø 0.4 – 1.8 mm, 15 – 40 cm) – straight lengths for reinforcing stems and securing flowers in a wreath, in packs of 10 to 120 pieces.
  • Decorative wire and nylon-coated beading wire – curly wire with a diameter of 0.25 mm for decorations and nylon-coated steel cable with a diameter of 0.4 mm for threading beads.

What wire diameter do you need?

The diameter determines how easily the wire bends and how much weight it can support. You can bend thin wire measuring 0.25 to 0.4 mm in diameter with your fingers; it works well for wrapping beads and tying small flowers. Wire with a diameter of 0.5 to 0.8 mm holds its shape better and is suitable for rings, hooks and the framework of smaller ornaments. Thicker wire from 1 mm and stem wire with a diameter of 1.4 to 1.8 mm can support a heavier flower or an entire hanging decoration. Cut wire with wire cutters, as ordinary scissors quickly become blunt when used on wire.

What else do you need to work with wire?

For wire jewellery, you’ll need beads such as seed beads, and you can find other supplies in the Jewellery making category. Soft, fibre-covered wires for crafting with children have their own page: Pipe cleaners.
